Contemporary Space
Nestled among the coastal hills of Northland, Salt & Stone Gallery draws its character from the raw elements that shape this northern edge of Aotearoa — the salt-laden air of the Pacific and the weathered stone of ancient cliffs and rocky shores.
The gallery presents contemporary New Zealand art with a strong connection to land and material. Works on show often explore texture, light, and the quiet tension between permanence and change: ceramics that carry the memory of clay and fire, paintings that hold the shifting blues of the northern sea, sculpture formed from local stone and found timber, and photography that captures the sparse beauty of Northland’s dunes, kauri forests, and tidal edges.
The space itself is deliberately unhurried. Light moves slowly across concrete floors and timber walls, and the salt air drifts in through open doors. Visitors are invited to linger — to look closely, to feel the weight of materials, and to experience art that feels rooted in this particular place.
Salt & Stone is a gallery for those who prefer substance over spectacle. It offers a considered selection of work by established and emerging artists who share a respect for the northern landscape and the quiet strength of natural materials.
