Debby Curreen

Debby Curreen is a self-published author who has lived, mostly, in Doubtless Bay since

1980 and she currently lives near the beautiful, Hihi peninsula. 

The Long Cold Nights of June was published in October 2018 and to date over 500 copies

have been distributed nationally and overseas. This is a collection of poems written by

Debby following the suicide of her brother, Hori in 2006. “My hope is that my words will bring

healing, hope and life back to anyone that has tragically lost a loved one.” –Debby Curreen 

Debby has published three other collections of poetry, a short story collection and has two,

as yet, unpublished novels waiting in the wings. She has had several pieces included in

anthologies in Northland and throughout Aotearoa, including the definitive grief almanac, a

liminal gathering by Iona Winter (Elixir Star Press 2023).

Debby won the 2024 Matariki Puanga Poetry competition held at Te Ahu Museum in Kaitaia

for her poem, ‘The tangi rain is over’.

As well as writing and publishing, Debby enjoys editing other people’s work. More Than

This-Writings of Remembrance by the Suicide Bereaved is her first anthology as sole

editor, publishing under her Grumpy Dog Publishing label (est.2024). The collection contains

thirty-seven pieces of writing by twenty-seven authors throughout Aotearoa and from

overseas.

In her spare time, Debby can be found hanging out at the beach with her dogs and boogie

board, spending time with close friends and family, sharing meals and a glass of local wine,

and mostly having a good laugh.
