Māra Kokotoha is a 6.5 hectare property in Whangārei, Tai Tokerau, Aotearoa (Northland, New Zealand.) We present art, hold events, and host musicians to play intimate house shows built around community and food.
This rural property in the shadow of Maungamaunu (Maunu mountain) in the Maunu area of Whangārei. This rectangular parcel occupies a south-facing hillside between the Pukenui and Otaika forest reserves. These forests are home to many of New Zealand's treasured species like kiwi and short-tailed bats.
Historically this land was forest, specifically "volcanic taraire forest" (an endangered ecosystem) but for the last century has been host of cows, sheep, and pigs. However, we are committed to returning this land to primarily native plants. We will be reserving some areas for a food forest, camping, and our living and gardening needs. However, the vast majority is to be replanted with natives to encourage a safe habitat for native animals.
The caretakers, Elise and Jesse, two nature-lovers and installation artists, have already started installing artworks throughout the property. We host artists for retreats and campouts, art installations, green tech experiments, couchsurfers, campers, and more.
