Jesse Card

I am an artist and maker based in Whangārei. I tend to work across sculpture, installation, fabrication and whatever other medium seems useful for an idea.

I am particularly interested in physical phenomena, perceptions, and materials that alter them: things that reflect, refract, move, heat up, bend, reflect, grow, decay, respond to their surroundings or behave in unexpected ways. My background includes laser cutting, CAD, machining, welding, electronics and digital fabrication, so technology and engineering often find their way into the work, although I am usually more interested in what they allow me to explore than in the technology itself.

A lot of my work begins with experimentation rather than a finished image in mind. I might start with a material, a strange property, an available machine or a question and then see where it leads.

I am currently developing more large-scale sculpture and object-based work, with interests in ecology, landscape and environmental processes. I enjoy making work that crosses the boundaries between art, engineering and the natural world, particularly when the result is something a little difficult to categorise.
